Print Quality Troubleshooting

Most print quality issues are caused by printer maintenance not the toner. Follow the steps below to diagnose and fix common problems.

Important to Know The vast majority of print quality problems, such as streaks, fading, smearing, or uneven output, are caused by a dirty printer interior, a worn drum unit, or aging printer components. Toner defects are rare. Start with the steps below before assuming it's the cartridge.

Dust, loose toner particles, and debris inside the printer are the most common cause of print quality issues. A quick cleaning often resolves streaks, spots, and faded areas.

  • Power off the printer and unplug it before opening any panels.
  • Remove the toner cartridge and set it aside on a flat surface away from light.
  • Use a dry, lint-free cloth or compressed air to gently clean the interior cavity, focusing on visible toner dust or debris.
  • Wipe the paper feed rollers with a slightly damp lint-free cloth to remove buildup.
  • Check the scanner glass / laser window (if accessible) and wipe clean with a dry cloth.
  • Reinstall the cartridge close all panels, and run a test print.

The drum unit is a wear-and-tear component that degrades over time. A worn or damaged drum is a leading cause of repeating marks, black lines, or ghost images on printed pages.

  • Check the drum page count — most drums are rated for 10,000–30,000 pages. If yours is near or past that limit, replacement is likely needed.
  • Inspect the drum surface for scratches, dust marks, or white streaks. Even small marks can cause repeating defects on prints.
  • Avoid touching the drum surface directly — oils from skin can cause permanent marks.
  • Replace the drum unit if it shows wear, is past its page count, or if print issues persist after cleaning.
  • Run a test print after replacement to confirm the issue is resolved.

Like any mechanical device, printers have components that wear out over time. If cleaning and drum replacement didn't resolve the issue, other internal parts may be the cause.

  • Fuser unit — responsible for bonding toner to paper using heat. A failing fuser causes smearing, unfused toner, or wrinkled output. Fusers typically last 50,000–100,000 pages.
  • Transfer roller — transfers toner from drum to paper. Worn rollers cause uneven print density or missing sections.
  • Paper feed rollers — worn rollers cause paper jams, skewed prints, or multi-sheet feeds that distort output quality.
  • Corona wire (on some models) — if dirty, it causes streaks or uneven charging. Clean gently with the built-in cleaner if your printer has one.

Consult your printer's manual or manufacturer website for component page-life ratings and replacement guidance.

After completing steps 1–3

Once you've cleaned the printer, checked the drum, and inspected key components, it's time to evaluate the cartridge itself.

  • Reinstall the cartridge and print a test page or configuration page from the printer's own menu.
  • Gently rock the cartridge side to side (5–6 times) before installing — this redistributes toner evenly and can improve output.
  • Check the toner level — a nearly empty cartridge can produce faded or uneven prints.
  • Try a different cartridge if one is available — this quickly confirms whether the cartridge is the source of the issue.

Defective cartridges do occasionally occur, but they are rare. If issues persist only with one specific cartridge after the printer has been verified as clean and functional, the cartridge may be the cause — please contact us.

Quick Checklist: Clean interior → Check/replace drum → Inspect fuser & rollers → Test print → Evaluate cartridge last. In most cases, the issue is resolved before reaching the cartridge.
